Cool Tones in Cold Weather: Marco Kiko Chan's LomoChrome Color '92 Shots

Marco Kiko Chan is a Filipino Chinese American film photographer based in New York City and Westchester County. During a snowstorm in the city, Marco took to Washington Square Park to shoot the chaos of a mass snowball fight on a roll of the new LomoChrome Color '92 ISO 400 film. Let's take a look at his results and hear about his first impressions!

Hi Marco, can you tell us about the concept for this shoot?

I had originally planned to go about my typical routine of shooting a mix of candid street photos and street portraits to test out the new LomoChrome Color '92 film. A few days before I planned to go out to use the roll, I saw a post on Instagram from Sidetalk NYC that a big snowball fight was going to happen in Washington Square Park, so I decided to make a change of plans and shoot the roll at the snowball event instead. My intention was to capture the fun and chaos of the snowball fight.

How would you describe the look of this film?

Vibrant with the colors leaning toward the cooler side.

Do you have a favorite photo taken with this film?

Yes, this one. It was one of my favorite moments from the event— one person pulling out a half gallon of almond milk in the middle of the Washington Square Park fountain while snowballs were flying overhead.

What do you like most about this film?

My impression of Lomography film is that it's been great quality and reliable, all while being priced lower than its competitors. I think the new LomoChrome Color '92 stays true to that.

How do you feel about a new color negative film being on the market?

I'm excited! I think it's great to see film evolve now that more and more photographers are choosing to shoot film. Lomography has been a brand that continues to push accessibility and innovation into the film photography space to meet the needs of modern day photographers.

What do you think is the perfect situation for shooting this film?

Since it's 400 ISO, I would say it's a pretty well-balanced film for most situations, but since it leans toward the cooler side. I think to balance that it's probably best shot in sunnier, warmer situations.

Which camera did you use with this film?

Canon Sure Shot A1. I chose to use this camera because it is weatherproof and was able to withstand the cold and wet environment of a snowball fight.

What are your hopes for the future of film photography?

I hope film photography continues to grow in modern contexts, and I hope it becomes more and more accessible for everyone. For me, shooting film has been a refreshing and rewarding experience, and I hope that it serves as a respite to those who perhaps yearn for a little less time with screens and more quality time with themselves and with loved ones.
