A Slice of Biarritz and Paris on LomoChrome Color '92 with Lomographer @milchtrinken

Friederike Vogl, a.k.a. milchtrinken, is a Danish designer, illustrator and film photographer. Since falling in love with film, her staple Lomo LC-A+ has led her to be a valued member of the Lomography online community for nearly twenty years.

We sent Friederike a roll of our new LomoChrome Color '92 film, which she took on a trip to Biarritz and Paris this Autumn. The result was a beautifully cool, pastel slice of French coastal and urban life. Here, we speak with Friederike about her analogue journey and her experience shooting Color '92.

Hi Friederike! Could you start by telling us a bit about yourself and how you got started with film photography?

Hi there! Thanks for having me. My name is Friederike Vogl, and I am a graphic designer and illustrator based in Denmark. I got a kickstart into photography when one of my sisters needed some pictures taken for a school assignment quite a few years ago. Since she herself was to be in those pictures, someone else had to do the photographing. So my father handed me his old SLR and gave me a short intro into how to use it. That photo shoot came with quite a few challenges, but in the end my sister got a good grade for her project, and I fell in love with analogue photography.

You’ve been a part of the Lomography community for the best part of 20 years! What has kept you shooting film and continuing to share with the community for so long?

Shooting film simply never lost its magic for me. There are so many awesome moments in this whole process. Like being in the darkroom and seeing a photo you took appear on a blank piece of paper. That brings me so much joy, every single time.

For a while I didn’t shoot film, since my LC-A+ was broken. But while I continued to take pictures, I noticed that I really missed shooting film. When I finally had my LC-A+ fixed, I was beyond happy to get to put a film into it and start shooting again!

What do you look for when you’re taking photographs? What excites you?

Aside from some themes that I keep coming back to (seaside life for example), I very much like to not look for things, but to get surprised. To take on a walk and just see what comes my way. Finding sweet moments in everyday life and then trying to capture those moments on film keeps exciting me the most.

How did you find shooting with the LomoChrome Color ‘92?

Getting the chance to shoot a film I had not used before was so much fun. It felt like being handed a photographic grab bag and then eagerly awaiting finding out what you got. I decided to take my roll of LomoChrome Color ’92 with me on a trip to Biarritz and Paris and shoot it with my trusty LC-A+. When it came to the question of what exactly to shoot, I opted for a wild mix because I really wanted to put this new film to the test and see which results I would get in different settings.

What do you think is the ideal situation for shooting this film?

I like the results I got from shooting the LomoChrome Color ’92 in bright daylight very much. So I’d definitely say that sunshine is its chance to shine. Apart from the lighting conditions, portraits! Seeing some of the awesome portraits that fellow Lomographers took with this film, made me realize just how well it works for portraits. This might actually be my favorite thing about the LomoChrome Color ’92.

Do you have a favourite shot from this project?

If I had to choose one picture, it would have to be the portrait of the Parisian florist. On a stroll through the city, I saw him sweeping the sidewalk, and I thought he and his storefront would make for a nice picture. When I asked him if I could take his picture, he kindly agreed, cracked a joke and struck a pose. Klick, picture taken. Merci beaucoup. Even though this whole encounter lasted less than a minute, it turned into a lasting memory for me—thanks to taking this picture.

Where do you draw inspiration for your images?

I find inspiration both within and outside of photography. Being a designer, I am a very visual person. I love to look at and be affected by all kinds of stuff—places, books, design works, street art … and photos of course.

Do you have any other projects coming up that you’d like to share?

I’m planning on making my first photo zine—something I’ve been wanting to try for quite some time. And now I feel I have just the right pictures to get going. Super excited to see how this is going to turn out!
