Let's Go on an Adventure With Roda Nona & the ActionSampler!

But it doesn't have to be a motorcycle, according to them using roller skates or driving a car is still included in the concept of "Roda Nona". Their other interests of culinary arts and fashion have resulted in captivating content. Recently they took our very own ActionSampler camera on their adventures. Let's chat with Bella, Khansa, Laras and Wanda about Roda Nona!
Hi, Roda Nona! It’s great to have you here at Lomography! Tell us about yourselves. What do you do? What are some of your interests?
Roda Nona started as a playful project that we made to have fun. We are women in our late twenties and early thirties, in the environment we live in there’s like this unspoken myth that life stops when women reach a certain age or a certain phase like marriage. But we just live life to the fullest and our youthful spirit debunked that myth. We are here to have fun and people can see that. We love to travel, to dig into pop culture, to learn a lot of things, and of course beauty and fashion.
What’s it like to be a Roda Nona these days? How do you spend your week?
It’s been a wonderful ride, we get to experience a lot of things we didn’t know were possible. Our seven days in a week consist of strolling around town, food hunting, sightseeing, cafe-hopping, and thrifting clothes to build our own wardrobe.
How did you get into analogue photography?
It might have started back in the tumblr.com era where analogue photography suddenly rocketed as an aesthetic. We do have analogue cameras but we spend most of our time using digital and smartphones.
How did you like shooting with the ActionSampler? Is it something you’d permanently incorporate in your repertoire?
Just like with any other Lomo cameras, it’s easy to operate, but the fun relies on how we calculate momentum to click the shutter and result in a moving picture through simultaneously taking four sequenced photos.
Yes! It’s like we learned a new storytelling-tool through analogue photography. It would be a great satisfaction to finally be able to smoothly use it.
Any tips for people using the ActionSampler or other experimental film cameras for the first time?
Handling analogue cameras is paradoxically an anticipated surprise. You know what you captured but the results are somehow unexpected and that is exciting! Once you capture a moment it’s forever etched into the film. What’s special with Lomo cameras is that we don’t have to operate on a certain setting to capture something, it just sort of happens and that’s the magic of it. In Roda Nona we have many spontaneous moments that are kind of like using Lomo, but it’s even more exciting with the ActionSampler and its epic effects on film. We are newbies, so I guess it all comes down to feeling. So the results will be natural and wonderful.
Can you tell us about what you decided to shoot with the ActionSampler?
Mostly moments in our daily endeavors or when we travel to other cities.
What feature do you like most about the ActionSampler ?
The amount of color and light is going to surprise you when the results come out. It gives a nostalgic feel, and when you get blur it becomes artistic.
How do you choose the perfect situation for shooting this camera?
The most important thing is sufficient lighting since we don’t have a flash.
Can you use three words to describe the ActionSampler?
Easy, light, unique.
What is one thing you have been dying to explore further (anything from a place to a particular subject)? What is your dream project?
We would like to get our hands on other types of analogue cameras to accompany our future travels. It would make such a great memento for us to put in our Rumah Merona. Rumah Merona is our dream project where there will be a bed and breakfast, a small cafe, a studio, and an offline store that sells our merchandise. Wish us luck!
What future projects are in the works and what’s on your mind?
We are currently working on programs to generate organic content about traveling, fashion and beauty on our Youtube channel.
Any messages to Indonesian Lomographers out there?
Have a keen eye for good angles in every situation but be open to surprises about the results. Also keep being curious to explore, there will be surprises in the process.
