@akky_photograph's Dreamlike Photos with Lomography Cameras and Film

1

Lomography films are perfect for a variety of different situations. Whether you need a reliable film stock for your travel photos or you just want to spice up your daily snaps with some psychedelic colors, there probably is a film stock just right for the occasion. New Lomographer Akky’s, (aka @akky_photograph) photos are filled with a personal look at his life in Japan with different Lomography films that turn his slice-of-life images into something otherworldly.

Akky is 28 years old and works in the field of IT. On the weekends he mostly takes slice-of-life photos mixing portraits, landscapes, and everything in between. His journey in photography started with digital cameras but he didn’t feel a connection with his photos. It was when he started analogue photography that he felt he could really get genuine results and a sense of rawness in each photo. For him, film photography makes him more in-tune with the whole process of taking a photo which is what he loves about it.

He uses both 35 mm and 120 formats to take pictures with his Lomo LC-A+, Canon AE-1, and Yashicaflex being the gear he usually rotates. As he mostly does street photography the LC-A+ is the camera he usually has on him because of its portability and light weight.

Every time you take a photo, you have to think about what ISO, shutter speed, and F value you want to set. It's a lot of work. But if you focus on taking that one photo seriously, your feelings for that photo will become stronger, and you'll start to feel the need to cherish it. This is a feeling you can't get with a digital camera. This is because digital cameras can store thousands of images on an SD card, so you can take continuous pictures without thinking too much.

Besides the LC-A+, Akky also has fun using the LomoApparat. He uses all the functions of the camera such as the kaleidoscope lens attachment and multiple exposure switch to create trippy images of nature.

LomoApparat is a very interesting camera. A light and compact camera that you can put in your pocket and carry anywhere. I usually take photos using a lens with a focal length of 50 mm. The focal length of LomoApparat is 21 mm (wide-angle lens), so I was worried whether I would be able to take good pictures. But when I looked at the photos I took, I was in love with all of them. Without looking at the viewfinder, you can just point the camera in the direction of the scene you want to take and press the shutter button. This is a camera that allows you to enjoy shooting without much thought. It was also fun to use the included Kaleidoscope lens to take kaleidoscope-like photos. This is a camera that takes fun and beautiful photos.

Akky admits he’s at a loss for words when describing his own style of photography, saying that when it comes to portraits he tends to take more time to find something to reference, while, depending on his mood, he is more trigger-happy when doing street photography. Despite this, a common theme in his photos is a sense of dreaminess and tenderness. His choice of film stocks, namely the Lomography Redscale XR, LomoChrome Turquoise, and LomoChrome Purple create a sense of magic realism blending the simple day-to-day with the mysticism of the film color shifts. Even with the Lomography Color Negative 800 film stock, he manages to capture his photos with a lovely haze that softens every subject.

LomoColor 800 is useful when shooting in low-light locations such as aquariums and indoors. Since the sensitivity is high, there is no need to slow down the shutter speed too much. Therefore, you can take beautiful photos of fast-moving fish. I've only taken pictures at aquariums, but it might be suitable for taking pictures of cityscapes at night. I felt that the granularity of the 800 would create an impressive image of the city at night.
I think turquoise is suitable for photographing natural scenery, buildings, and plants. When you take a photo of a person, the photo looks like the movie Avatar. However, it is a very interesting film that takes unrealistic and otherworldly photos. Personally, I really like when the blue sky turns orange.

When going around Kawagoe he wanted to try out the Lomography Redscale XR to try and highlight the heat of Japan's summer. The use of this stock was magical but he does admit he had a hard time figuring out which ISO to stick with.

Changing the ISO drastically changes the color tone, so I thought I had to think carefully about the theme of the photo. I knew that if I set the ISO to a low sensitivity, the color of the subject would remain, and if I set the ISO to a high sensitivity, the color would disappear and the subject would turn red. This time, I wanted to express the intense heat of Kawagoe, Japan, so I used Redscale. Also, if I set the ISO to 200, the whole image would turn bright red and the elegant colors of Kawagoe would disappear, so I took the photo at ISO 50.

Akky is most drawn to the LomoChrome Purple among all the Lomography films he uses. He finds it the most playful amongst the other film stocks and loves the fact that overexposing or underexposing the photo will give the photo interesting characteristics. Looking at his shots with the LomoChrome Purple, he embodies the Lomography spirit through his psychedelic experimental multiple exposures. He mixes portraits with flowers and layers cityscapes on top of one another which emulates a "concrete jungle".

Akky's experimental and dreamy approach to photography is a pleasure to see and is right up there with many longtime Lomographers. We can't wait to see more of his photos!

Multiple exposure may seem difficult, but it is a very fun technique. Multiple exposures allow you to enjoy Lomography film many times more. Please try taking lots of multiple-exposure photos!

We thank Akky for sharing his dreamy photos! Make sure to keep up with his work here on his LomoHome. Tell us below, when did you start to experiment with photography!
