What is the Best ISO for Shooting the Sprocket Rocket Panoramic Camera?

Have you ever wondered which ISO is best for the Sprocket Rocket 35 mm Panoramic Camera? We tested our camera with three different film speeds to try and figure it out once and for all.

We grabbed one roll of Lomography Color Negative 35 mm ISO 100, one of Lomography Color Negative 35 mm ISO 400, one of Lomography Color Negative 35 mm ISO 800, loaded three cameras, and off we went.

We needed to shoot the same scenario each time to get a plausible comparison, and we tried to have different light situations as well. We were blessed with warm and sunny summer days, rich with contrasty scenes and bright light all day long.

The Camera Experince

This camera is a delight to take around. One of its stronger features is its lightweight body. You can have three of these in your bag, and yet it's not even close to the weight most other cameras have.

Ergonomically friendly, it fits your hand at all times, as well as having the classic strap that goes around your neck. Combining all these practical advantages to the final pictures with those sexy sprockets: the results are truly unique and distinctive.

The classic subject that shines with this lens is landscape. Given its 30 mm focal length, it really opens its arms to the world and sucks it all in for your eyes to wander left and right. The minimalist settings take the worries away. Keep a steady wrist, trust your sunny f16 for the middle of the day, and you can't go wrong.

The Verdict

All three films performed well in different circumstances. Each of them retained their properties and showed their characteristics. During the bright sunny day, for each film the contrast is satisfying, and the shadow still hold a good quality. We can appreciate the latitude of each film and their wonderful stretching capabilities.

We were pleasantly surprised to see that the CN 100 ISO still gave optimal results in difficult conditions. When tested later at sunset, of the three films, this is the one that had a more challenging setting to work with due to the low ISO and the fixed aperture and shutter speed. The resulting photo, compared to the others, is somewhat flatter, but this is to be expected.

We had no doubt that of the three films, the 800 ISO would not disappoint, and indeed it shined bright like a diamond. Being one of our favorites, and community favorite as well, it worked wonders, delivering each shot perfectly with vibrant colors, perfect contrast, and shadow details that are sharp and clear.

The 400 ISO is certainly your safest choice of all. Clean and balanced, this film is a trusted stock to always keep with you. It delivers brilliant highlights and delicate shadow details while maintaining a balanced tonal range.

One last note we must acknowledge: be careful when handling your camera to never switch to bulb mode during the day, as this silly mistake cost us a couple of shots. Closing this intense duel we are crowning the winner to be our 800 ISO. Nonetheless, we must also reward the one that actually did the hardest work of all, and so the honorable mention goes to the 100 ISO.
