Ariana Genilla's Dreamy, Vintage-Inspired Daguerreotype Achromat Shots

Ariana Genilla is back with us today, having previously sharing her Diana Mini shots, to tell us all about her recent experience with the Daguerreotype Achromat 2.9/64 Art Lens.

For her shoot with the lens, the Las Vegas-based photographer teamed up with musical artist Madison Deaver for totally melodically-inspired, dreamy and ethereal results!

Hi Ariana, welcome back to Lomography Magazine! What have you been up to since your last feature?

Hi! Thank you so much for having me again! I have been intensely busy building my business and working on creative portrait shoots with new clients.

Can you tell us about what you decided to shoot with the Daguerreotype Achromat?

I decided to shoot with music artist Madison Deaver in a record store. As a portrait photographer, I knew I wanted to shoot with a subject while keeping the dreamy nature of the lens in mind. I have shot with Madison before and always love her style and posing technique. So, it worked out perfectly and the vintage theme pulled it all together.

What was your first impression of the lens?

I loved the look and feel of it! The heavy gold and intriguing design. Then when I did a few test shots, I fell for the dreamy, ethereal images. It’s truly an incredible piece.

What camera did you use with the lens?

My old Canon Rebel t5.

What was your favorite feature of the lens?

The fact that it is gold plated, but also the aperture plates. They can create such dramatic effects just by simply swapping them out. I really liked playing with light and being able to design light bursts into my backgrounds, even with natural daylight.

Do you have a favorite shot taken with the lens?

It was definitely this one! There were other patrons in the store at the time, but the shop attendant was totally cool with Madison hoping onto the front counter and she went straight into this dramatic pose. And of course I love the star light bursts created by the aperture plate I used.

Do you have any tips or tricks to share for shooting with the lens?

Similar to film, if your color and light settings are good, the photos can be amazing straight out of camera. It took very minimal editing, so if you want to lessen your editing time, definitely use this lens with your best camera settings and you will be good to go!

Are there any upcoming projects or shoots you can tell us about?

I just bought the LomoApparat 21 mm Wide-angle camera, so I am very excited to begin using it. I am hosting some content days here in Las Vegas, and I will definitely be bringing it along with me.
