JP Calma's Portraits on LomoChrome Purple 2021 Pétillant Film

2

We recently sent our LomoAmigo JP Calma a roll of our newly reformulated LomoChrome Purple 2021 Pétillant film to test out. Afterwards we got to talk to him about his first impressions of the film as well as his tips and tricks. Let's take a look at his psychedelic purple results.

Hello, could you tell us about yourself and your work?

My name is JP and I'm photographer from Bay Area, California. I started shooting film in mid 2019. I do a lot of street portraits and the occasional vintage car photo here and there.

Could you share your experience using the LomoChrome Purple 2021 Pétillant Film? How was it compared to shooting other regular Color Negative film?

I really enjoyed shooting the new LomoChrome Purple film. I think going into it I had a specific idea in mind because you know what this film stock can do as far rendering the greens, and you would want to take advantage of that — unlike shooting your typical color negative that you can just shoot anything and everything.

Did you experiment with the extended ISO range of this film?

I rated this film at 320 to over expose it a bit, nothing too crazy, just to see how that would affect the purple tones.

The color of your subject’s outfit and the natural setting contrast very well together, was this planned ahead of time with the color shift in mind?

Not the outfit that Elana was wearing (I think she was wearing a blue and black striped dress) but the scene was definitely planned. I knew what Lomo Purple can do with greens so we chose a location that had lots of trees and grass. It just worked out quite well that the film complimented her dress at the same time.

Is your process of shooting with LomoChrome Purple any different than your process of shooting with regular color negative or black and white film?

Most definitely. I would be a little bit more picky with my scene and photos (when shooting Lomo Purple.) I would go out of my way to get a shot of something green or if I know I'm going to a specific location that has greens then I'll have this film stock in mind to shoot it there.

Is there a specific picture that you like most from this test roll? Can you explain why?

The photo of her sitting down holding the flower while looking up. This is definitely my favorite from the set. It was totally unintentional but the way that tiny tree behind her framed her hair added more to the photo.

If you could sum up your Purple experience in three words, what would they be?

Fun, Pleasant and of course Purple

Have you shot with LomoChrome Purple before? If so, how do you like this formula compared to the previous LomoChrome Purple film?

I have shot it once before. I rated my first Lomo Purple film at box speed and this new one at 320, I don't know if it's the slight over exposing but the new batch has a lighter purple tone which I really like. The first roll I shot had darker purples which in most cases I would like because of the contrast but I really enjoyed the lighter shade of purple the new formula offered.

If you were to shoot another roll of LomoChrome Purple 2021 Pétillant, would you do anything different?

I do want to experiment with color filters and see how the film reacts to different colors but mainly curious how the greens would turn out. Aside from that maybe a different format. Like a panorama of some sort. My friend (Devan Holt) shot Lomo Purple on 6x17 and it just looked amazing.

Any advice you’d like to share with future LomoChrome Purple users?

Just have fun with it. It's a different experience than your typical color negative film. Try shooting it in different ISO and see how different the colors get.
