William Klein: Yes at ICP Is Focusing on a Lifetime of Iconic Work

William Klein has done it all: painting, graphic design, street photography, fashion photography, documentary film, fiction film, and bookmaking. Now Klein, who is especially known for his unusual photographic techniques in both photojournalism and fashion photography, is having a retrospective exhibition of his entire life’s work on view at the International Center of Photography in New York.

The exhibition, titled William Klein: YES, is the first U.S. exhibition devoted to Klein’s extensive collection of work in over a generation.

The exhibition, which is running from June 3 through September 12, 2022, has been curated by David Campany, ICP’s Curator-at-Large, who has worked with Klein for over a decade in bringing together all of the different assets of his work.

The exhibition is a chronological exploration of Klein’s life and development as an artist. His works being shown include photographic studies from around the world, cameraless abstract photography, and iconic celebrity portraits. Excerpts from his range of films about Muhammad Ali, Elderidge Cleaver, the Pan-African festival of Algiers, the beauty industry, imperialism, and consumer culture will also be featured.

“This exhibition at ICP is a homecoming of sorts for Klein, who was born in upper Manhattan in 1928 and began his photography career on our city’s streets,” said ICP Director David Little. “He then became a truly international artist, living most of his life in Paris and capturing the unique character of global cities in his renowned photo books. Klein is a living legend of image-making, and ICP is honored to celebrate a prodigious career that influenced and inspired generations.”

    Cineposter Tokyo 1961 💖 I have the polka magazine version thanks to lomography france to made me got that awesome prize. And that Dakar Senegal photo and oh Karl Lagerfeld aarrgghh quite regret selling my william klein signature instant camera but what can I say I need the money and I already have an instant camera 😢 film become more expensive now
