LomoAmigo Sean Marc Lee on the Romance of Instant Photography

Photographer Sean is currently based in Taiwan. He focuses on American lifestyle, as well as street and editorial fashion. We can always see the beauty and humor of life in his works. In this interview, he talks about the attractions and highs of taking instant pictures.

What is your first impression of the Lomo'Instant Wide?

It is always exciting to get a new toy. Shooting in a different way can boost creativity and allow us to see the world in a different way.

Are there any differences between the Lomo’Instant Wide?

I love the ratio of the Lomo’Instant films. It looks more like a movie photo. I also have a Fuji Instax Wide back for Polaroid 600 but I have never experienced an instant camera like the Lomo’Instant Wide! It isn’t mechanical so it feels so good to use manually.

What is it like to shoot with the Lomo’Instant Wide?

I’ve liked the appearance and the outcome of an instant camera for years. My father took a lot of family photos with Polaroid 600. It helps me save me a lot of precious and “real” family memories. In these times when we can use Photoshop to edit, instant photos represent a kind of pureness. Every time I went to San Francisco to visit my parents, I’d try hard to find these photos from a shoe box. It’s a pity that we can only swipes these photos on a phone now.

We notice that you always take portrait photography. Why is that?

There is always an intimacy when taking portraits which I enjoy very much. It’s just like seeing them act naturally. It could simply be a hand gesture, the way they speak, the tiring face or even the content face when having delicious food! You might think that I’m a crazy person, that I am illogically stubborn to record these shared moments with people. I think what Nobuyushi Araki said is true: “…all women want to be tied up, and not only physically but mentally as well. If a man does not tie a beautiful women up, she will run away. You have to tie her up so she can’t..Photography is about communication between the photographer and his subject, the small details.” It’s just like dancing with an impossible partner, whereas there is some part of lust, some part of love, and a single wish to keep the memory.

Who is your favourite photographer?

Compared to photographers, I actually like film producers more. They are more sensitive to the visual arrangement—it could be photography, music, drama, action or the way to tell a story. As for photography itself, I appreciate the portfolio of Poland-based photographer Lukasz Wierzbowski. His works are always full of love and lust, a kind of saucy element that makes his works unique. Looking at his photography always makes me think “Why couldn’t I think like him!”

How do you suggest we use Lomo'Instant Wide?

Generally, I recommend that you to use it to memorize someone. It is real and you can take it, share it to him or her immediately.

What do you like about Lomo'Instant Wide the most?

The best experience I had with this camera is the day I got a photo with my favourite artist and director. I asked someone to take the photo for us, and when the photo came out, the artist grabbed the photo immediately. I didn’t even have the chance to look at the photo! I asked if I could take a look at it, you know what he said? “Oh, no, no, no. This is mine.” To me, it is a romantic story. It is a fleeting moment you can take away with you.
