Perfect Combination: The Olympus Trip 35 Meets Lomography Color Negative 800 Color Film for a Night Out

4

Just because a camera only has a limited ISO range doesn’t mean you can’t use a higher rated ISO film. In fact, it can be just the right combination depending on your type of photography.

Sometimes, when I’m so busy at work the only chance to do some street photography is at night.

For me, this means pairing up my designated camera for street shooting, the Olympus Trip 35, with an appropriate film, which in my case for night photography is the Lomography Color Negative 800 film.

The Olympus Trip 35 is basically an automatic point and shoot camera with only two shutter speeds: 1/200 and 1/40. For daytime photography, I tend to favor an ISO 200 film, set it at ‘A’ mode, and snap away. But for low light photography you will need a faster ISO film of at least 400 and also turn the aperture ring to f2.8, which will then set the camera to fire at 1/40.

If there is sufficient light source and if you are able to hold the camera still, your photos will turn out well. So the first tip is to find a bright light source. The second is to use a fast film such as the Lomography Color Negative 800.

I found that this combination works well for my style of snapshots at night. I don’t need it to be perfectly sharp but decent enough to remind me of what I saw.

But sometimes, it a user-fault; I’d inadvertently set the zone focus wrongly or was too much in a hurry to snap the moment.

The takeaway is this: even though the Olympus Trip 35 has an ISO range between 25-400, loading an ISO 800 speed film gives you an extra stop of light, which is great for my kind of night photography. This should also work with the older cameras with ISO settings of up to 100 or even 200.

The Lomography Color Negative 35mm 800 ISO film is a high-speed film designed to bring a burst of vibrant colour, as well as great saturation and contrast, in all lighting conditions! Shoot in bright sunshine, grey days, indoors or at night with a flash. See our selection of Lomography films here.
