An Afternoon with Reptiles

The Calabasas Commons is a small mid-scale shopping complex in the city of Calabasas in LA. It's very nice and quaint, what with its old Spanish Mission-style structures and its very relaxed atmosphere. I like coming here whenever I'm in the San Fernando Valley partly because it's got one of the three remaining bookstores in and around the Valley but mostly because of its man-made pond. The pond isn't drastically big or particularly stunning. It's got its nice features - the fountains spewing out water and disguised as giant-sized amphibians and reptiles, a statue of a boy trying to drag his boat to "shore" with a rope, and another statue of a boy doing a weird balancing act on top of two small rocks while fishing - but the best thing about this pond is that it isn't filled with fish; instead they had the brilliant idea of filling it up with a hundred or so turtles. Those adorable reptiles are shy and timid when you try and pet them but make no mistake, within seconds they could be crowding and scrambling near you, lifting their heads above the surface if you dangle anything that could be a tasty treat over them!

    Calabasas means pumpkins in spanish, doesn't it? XD I've seen this town as we pass through to LA, and I never had a clue that such a place was there! Maybe I'll stop by next time I'm down south. I love turtles.

    Only 3 book shops in the whole of the San Fernando Valley?

    @lazybuddha yes! and Calabasas isn't even technically in the Valley since it's up in the Hills so only 2 I guess! They've closed all the used bookstores and all the Borders so just two Barnes and Nobles in all of the San Fernando Valley (excluding college textbooks store of course)

    @lazybuddha that whole area is tragic! It used to be so full of promise, at least back in the 60s. now it's full of people who don't bother with books and talk like each statement is a question.
