    Welcome to the fifth edition of the BYOB/W FREE WORKSHOP in non-toxic processing at the GOWANUS DARKROOM. Join us FRIDAY MARCH 3RD to learn how to process your black and white film using beer and coffee – Super 8 mm, 16 mm, 35 mm, Medium Format, 4" x 5", 70 mm, ALL AGES + ALL FORMATS WELCOME! Everyone who attends will learn how to mix their own negative processing chemistry using a combination of consumable items from the grocery store. We’ll go over basic non-toxic processing options, then mix a synthesized solution created by Chris Knudsen and Steve Cossman based on the classic Caffenol (coffee) recipe and a beer processing “soup” developed by a friend of the org (and master chemist) Dagie Brundert. All ingredients, equipment, and safety gear will be provided – Bring Your Own Black & White as an exposed roll/cartridge of black and white film, still or moving images.     Join us in creating full-color moving image photograms on 35 mm film through traditional methods and DIY contact printing techniques! Participants will generate test strips with multiple color filters and have the option to layer photographic images using sync-blocks to bi-pack original footage with color positive stock. We’ll arrange, expose, develop and view work all in the same afternoon. Each participant will receive 50 of 35 mm film stock, access to chemistry, lab equipment, and safety gear. After completing tests and experiments as a collective group each participant will have 4 additional hours of access to the darkroom and wet lab facilities to create their own unique moving image photogram. Finished projects will be presented after the conclusion of the course at our screening party at Anthology Film Archives.

    In this workshop participants will be introduced to the method of making titles using the Oxberry Animation Stand. We’ll work as a group to shoot a demonstration for the method, then each individual participant will generate an exposure test in order to determine how to best shoot their own title. After settings have been identified, you’ll shoot 20’ of titles to edit into your film. The curriculum will cover the basics of loading ESTAR film stocks into your camera, how to conduct an exposure test, and how to create static top-lit titles from a printed cell. We will go over key chemical reactions, how to mix our own B/W chemistry and everything you’ll need to know to continue the process at home or at the MONO facility. All chemicals and equipment will be provided. Put the finishing touches on your film with crisp titles in BLACK & WHITE! Finished projects will also be presented after the conclusion of the course at our screening party at Anthology Film Archives.

    Learn the art and craft of Super 8 mm filmmaking shooting on Kodak’s newly re-released Ektachrome color reversal film! This will be a hands-on class designed for the beginner that covers all aspects of Super 8 mm filmmaking: cameras, angle, story, exposure, lighting, editing, and projection. Participants will conceive, capture, hand-develop and edit their own projection ready film prints. 2 workshops in 1 as you will also learn how to mix chemistry and develop your own film. We will also discuss alternatives to projection, sound, and how to promote your short film work with a list of Super 8 mm friendly film festivals around the world. All equipment and materials will be provided for. Finished projects will be presented after the conclusion of the course at our screening party at Anthology Film Archives.
